The interaction between lust and commerce in the foreground of Nancy Tilitz's Die Koppel, Hamburg is the central theme of the painting. Inspired by the Polish/ French artist Balthus's 1954 painting The Passage du Commerce Saint-Andre in which a fork in the road forces  a decision between two opposing paths, Tilitz presents the viewer a choice between religion and the meaner aspects of the street.
